Buchholz High School has many different clubs and organizations to be involved in, which is why it is so important for our chapter to go out and recruit new members. This school year we’ve taken part in many events to increase our membership including club fair, academy forum, and academy open house. These events have not only helped encourage membership in DECA but have also encouraged our currents members to be more active in our chapter.
In September, DECA held a table at the annual Buchholz Club Fair which takes place during lunches. Our officer team created little handouts that outlined everything a person needs to know about DECA. We walked around promoting ourselves to the students at Buchholz as well as handing out membership applications.
January is a huge recruiting month for Buchholz DECA as a lot of local eighth graders are making decisions about where to go to high school. With this in mind Buchholz DECA attended the Alachua County Career Academy Forum, an event designed to educate rising ninth graders and their parents about the programs local high schools offer. The night of the forum we again provided students and parents with information on what DECA is and how they can get involved. The turnout was incredible! My officers and I were flooded by parents and students asking questions about who we are and what we do.
The second event, Buchholz Academy Open House, was put on by our Academy of Entrepreneurship to highlight what marketing education can offer for students. At this event my officer team and I, alongside state VP Wesley Lopez, advocated for DECA. We spoke with ten groups of around twenty to forty students and parents on our personal experience with DECA and how it helped better us as individuals.
Member recruitment can be very difficult; but it is of utmost importance to invest time in gaining new members for the success of your chapter’s future. DECA relies on us as individual chapters to promote the association as a whole, which is why it is vital that when you proclaim “I Am DECA” you are doing so to show your love for this association and endorse all that DECA has to offer.
